What is competency-based education?

This type of education measures skills and learning rather than time. PCiBS students’ will progress through courses when they can prove they’ve mastered the material and not only at the end of a semester or term. Some students can learn faster, spend more time on schoolwork, or utilize knowledge they have from prior learnings. For these students to accelerate we have various modes of study. With 24/7/365 access to online learning resources, students can embark on an educational journey that is tailored according to where their knowledge and competencies currently are. This can only be concluded if an online self-assessment is performed by the potential student, prior to his engagement as a student with PCiBS. In addition, faculty members and lecturers will provide personalized learning support.

It doesn’t matter what obstacles and challenges you face, PCiBS will put in charge of your education. The following items are crucial to putting YOU into the drivers seat of your studies.

  • It’s individualized: Because every student is different, we believe the learning experience for our students should be built around you, not PCiBS.
  • It’s efficient: You focus on learning the material that’s new to you. We assist in some topics where you need a bit of a refresher and follow on through subjects you know well. If you are competent, you are competent! We don’t waste your time.
  • It’s supportive: You have a whole team around you to assist you making a success of your studies, from our faculty, lecturers, staff and your fellow students.
  • It’s flexible: Study when and where it works best for you. PCiBS LMS resources are anywhere WiFi is.

Why should I use the Talent or Gap Analysis tool?

Students / Coachee’s / Mentee’s should consider utilizing the Talent Analysis tool to identify their skills gap between their existing competencies/capabilities and the ones required by the role they wish to step into or are in. If you find that you are not growing in your role, then this analysis should be strongly considered.
Training Needs or Gap Analysis are conducted by a third party organization, and they are situated across the globe. These Talent and Gap analysis tools are being used in conjunction with the PCiBS individual development tool to identify the performance gaps, meet expected job responsibilities, and drive the upskilling of competencies through each individual’s career objectives and goals.

What is an Individual Development Plan?

An individual development plan (IDP) is a tool that assists students or any employee in managing their career and personal development. The primary purpose of an IDP is to help students and employees to reach short and long-term professional career goals. The IDP, as measured by PCiBS, provides input into improving student competencies and manage employees’ current job performance. The IDP is not a performance evaluation tool.

How long must an Individual Development Plan be managed?

The management of an IDP is not a one-time activity. It must be managed over a more extended period to see the benefit it holds for each individual to monitor and keep the focus on crucial competency gaps in their career.

What does Major(s) or Specialization mean?

Specialization:

The subjects are preselected to ensure that your active competency-based education is focused on the specialization selected

Major(s):

All majors consist of a group of subjects (normally 4 subjects) that focus on a specific discipline that will enhance the student’s ability to be competent in that area. With the focus being on active learning through assignments and hand-on practicals, PCiBS enforces the skills with their students and their ability to be able to be productive from the first day of employment.

Core:

All the specialization subjects are part of the core and these may not be replaced with other subjects unless it is approved by the relevant Faculty of PCiBS.

Elective:

The elective subjects are selected to enhance the specialization of a specific program to ensure competency in that specific discipline.

Alternate Elective:

Some programs have alternate elective subjects that can be selected. These are picked to ensure that any RPL credits received by a student can be substituted through the elective of core subjects that form part of the specialization program.

General specialization:

The only program that has the most electives and alternate electives in the General specialization programs and does not necessarily conform to the Major subject selection criteria. i.e. All students can pretty much pick what subjects they want to select for a General qualification.
